Advanced & Exam Students — performance preparation, interpretation, examinations and competitions.

Lessons Built Around the Student

No two students learn in exactly the same way. Lessons are adapted to each student’s strengths, pace and goals while maintaining strong foundations in technique, musicianship and musical expression.

  • Individual lesson plans
  • Technique and musicianship
  • Sight-reading and theory
  • Repertoire selected to suit the student
  • Performance confidence

  • Reading music independently
  • Preparing for graded examinations
  • Performing in concerts
  • Preparing for competitions
  • Building a lifelong appreciation of music

Teaching philosophy

Technical ability matters, but it is only one part of becoming a musician. Students are encouraged to understand the music, listen critically and develop their own musical expression rather than simply reproduce notes from the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome students of all ages and levels. Whether you are a complete beginner, returning to piano after many years, or an advanced pianist looking to develop your technique and musical performance, lessons are individually tailored to your needs and goals.

We teach children, teenagers and adults. Students can begin piano at a young age, while adults can start or continue their musical journey at any stage of life.

Yes. Beginners are very welcome. Lessons begin with the fundamentals of piano playing, including posture, hand position, finger technique, rhythm, reading music and basic theory. Students progress gradually according to their individual ability.

Yes. Advanced students can receive specialised instruction in piano technique, musical interpretation, repertoire, performance preparation and examination or diploma preparation.

Piano lessons are available at our studios in Ellerslie and Henderson, Auckland. The most suitable location can be discussed when arranging your lessons.

Yes. We offer live, individual online piano lessons for students who are unable to attend our Auckland studios. Online lessons are available to students in New Zealand and internationally.

Our standard individual lesson is 30 minutes. Lessons are one-on-one and focused entirely on the student’s individual development.

Lessons are normally held once a week. Regular weekly lessons provide continuity and help students make steady progress.

We offer a free assessment session to begin with. This gives us an opportunity to meet the student, understand their musical goals and assess their current level and ability.

Following the assessment, we can discuss the most suitable learning programme for the student and explain the lesson structure and costs based on their individual needs and goals.

A standard term consists of 10 individual lessons. Students normally attend one lesson per week, although alternative arrangements may be possible depending on availability and the student’s needs.

Learning books and other required materials are generally charged separately. The appropriate books are selected according to each student’s level and programme.

Ideally, students should have regular access to a suitable piano or keyboard for practice at home. Regular practice is an important part of developing piano technique and musical ability.

Yes. We provide structured preparation for recognised piano examinations and performance goals. The programme is selected according to the student’s level, ability and objectives.

We can provide preparation for recognised examination systems, including ABRSM, Trinity and other internationally recognised piano programmes, depending on the student’s goals and level.

Yes. Classical piano is an important part of our teaching, but lessons can also include popular music and other styles according to the student’s interests and musical goals.

Our teaching is highly personalised. We focus not only on learning pieces, but also on developing a strong technical and musical foundation.

Lessons may include:

  • Piano technique and healthy physical approach
  • Finger strength and independence
  • Rhythm and coordination
  • Music reading
  • Music theory
  • Musical expression and interpretation
  • Effective practice strategies
  • Repertoire development
  • Performance preparation
  • Examination preparation

The aim is to help each student become a confident, independent and expressive pianist.

Practice requirements depend on the student’s age, level and goals. Consistent, focused practice is more important than simply spending a long time at the piano.

Students are taught how to practise effectively so that their practice time produces meaningful progress.

Lesson times are reserved specifically for each student. Therefore, missed lessons generally remain payable, particularly when insufficient notice is given.

Where possible, a catch-up lesson may be arranged depending on availability and the circumstances.

Yes. We can arrange an introductory or assessment session where appropriate. This gives us an opportunity to meet the student, assess their current level, discuss their goals and recommend the most suitable learning programme.

Simply contact Piano Academy New Zealand with your name, age or the student’s age, current piano experience, preferred location and preferred days and times.

We will then discuss availability and the most suitable programme for you.

Absolutely. It is never too late to learn piano. Adult students can study for personal enjoyment, improve existing skills, prepare for performances or work towards recognised examinations.

Yes. Many students return to piano after a long break. We first assess your current ability and then create a suitable programme to rebuild technique, confidence and musical skills.

Yes. Diploma-level preparation can be arranged for suitable students. Because diploma study requires a high level of musical, technical and theoretical understanding, an initial assessment is normally required before accepting a student into a diploma programme.
